Description:

Tomb of the Unknowns Re-enactment This Weekend In Tulsa

Broken Arrow, OK. – Each year a group of 12 teenagers from around the Tulsa area, all members of Civil Air Patrol, the United States Air Force Auxiliary, practice twice per week beginning in January through the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend to re-enact the sacred ceremonies of the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. This is the only re-enactment of its kind in the United States.

“It truly gives you hope for the future seeing Young Men and Woman with such love for country and doing their part to never forget the men and women that pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free,” said Starbase Composite Squadron Commander First Lieutenant Gary Sutherland, “to witness such determination and respect in youth is an awe inspiring experience.” The Civil Air Patrol cadets are hand selected each year and they range in age from 12 to 20 years old. They are all volunteers and they give up 100% of their free time to prepare for and perform this ceremony.

The re-enactment will take place beginning at 9am on Saturday morning and will run through Monday afternoon at 5pm, every half-hour during the day and every hour at night 24 hours per day, rain or shine. Admittance to the ceremony is free and can be viewed by the public on the west side of the main building at Floral Haven Cemetery, adjacent to 71st and Olive in Broken Arrow.
