Squatters May Be To Blame For Tulsa Apartment Fire

Firefighters say squatters may be to blame for a fire in an apartment building Wednesday morning.

The apartments are located at 6301 East 30th Street.

Firefighters arrived to find flames in the attic in a part of the building that didn't have any tenants. Firefighters knocked the flames down quickly and say no one was hurt.

They say there's a history of squatters staying the building.

Augustine Christian Academy's surveillance cameras recorded video of the fire. Firefighters say a pile of clothes in a shopping cart next to the building caught on fire and the flames spread to the wall.

The school's operations director, John Ahrens, says one of the students told him about the fire. Ahrens says neighbors started calling 911 while he knocked on doors to make sure everyone got out safely.

"First of all, they're our neighbors so we want to make sure that they're safe and out of the apartment."

Firefighters say no one was hurt in the fire. They say power was shut off to four of those apartments and those families will have to find another place to stay for a while.
